New Haven, Conn. – Freshman Genesis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn.) of the women's volleyball team and junior Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) of the men's soccer team have been named as the Albertus Magnus College Student-Athletes of Week. Initiated in September, 2017, the 'Athlete of the Week' program recognizes one female and one male student-athlete each week for demonstrated excellence on the playing field.
In a 2-2 week, Cora Luquis averaged a team-high 3.38 kills per set, while hitting .273. The outside hitter also picked up 3.23 digs per set and fired a total of two aces to go with two blocks assists. Cora Luquis swung for 10 or more kills in three out of the four matches and recorded a double-double in the loss to Rutgers-Newark.
Russo, who was also named GNAC Corvias Goalkeeper of the Week, stopped 21 shots for an .875 save percentage in a 1-1 week, making eight saves in a 2-0 setback at Westfield State before stopping a career-high 13 saves in a 2-1 win over Suffolk.
The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team returns to action this week as the Falcons host Medgar Evers on Tues., Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. The men's soccer team is back in action tonight at Hunter College. Kick-off is set for 4 p.m. in New York.
