Waltham, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College baseball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader versus Lasell on Monday evening at Stein Diamond on the campus of Brandeis. The Falcons took the opener, 9-8, and the Lasers scored a 6-0 victory in the nightcap.
With the split, Albertus Magnus moves to 7-13 overall and 1-3 in league play, while the Lasers now sit at 9-11 on the spring and 1-3 in conference contests.
In the opener, the Falcons jumped out to an early, 9-0, advantage thanks to scoring three in the first and six in the second inning. Down the stretch, AMC held off a late Lasell comeback attempt to earn their first GNAC win of the spring.
On the mound, junior starter Christopher Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) went the distance to record his second win of the season. Rivera scattered eight hits and struck out a season-high nine hitters.
Offensively, Albertus opened the scoring in the top of the first courtesy of a two-run homer from senior infielder Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.). Later in the stanza, freshman shortstop Mike Browne (New Fairfield, Conn.) sent a two-out RBI single through the left side to give the guests a three-run edge.
The Falcons blew the game open with six runs the following inning. During the stanza, both Browne and senior Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) smacked singles that brought home two runs apiece, while senior outfielder Ted Gravel (Morris, Conn.) chipped in a run-scoring single.
Over the final five innings, Rivera was able to get himself out of trouble and he sealed the triumph with a strikeout to end the game.
At the dish, Poirier and classmate Steven Lockman (Wallingford, Conn.) both had three hits apiece. Three other Falcons contributed registered multi-hit games as well.
In the finale, Laser starting pitcher Daniel Petr tossed a three-hit shutout for his first win of the year. On the opposite side, Jon Criscio (East Haven, Conn.) was saddled with the loss after tossing four innings and surrendering five earned runs. Junior lefty Tom Moore (East Haven, Conn.) worked the final two innings and fanned two batter for the Falcons.
Three different AMC players recorded hits in the game and Lasell plated two runs apiece in the second, fourth and fifth frames.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, April 13, with a non-conference clash against Mount Saint Mary under the lights at Rochford Field. The Falcons are looking to avenge a 4-2 setback versus the Knights earlier this spring.
