The Albertus Magnus Falcons (19-6, 15-3 GNAC) used two second half runs to defeat the Suffolk University Rams (6-19, 2-16 GNAC) 77-63 on Saturday afternoon as both teams finished the 2009-10 regular season. Sophomore forward Ray Askew (New Haven, Conn.) lead all scorers with 22 points and all rebounders with 21, finishing the season as the best rebounder in the GNAC.
Albertus outscored the Rams, 42-25 in the game's second half, highlighted by an incredible half by Askew who had 15 points and 16 rebounds in the game's final twenty minutes. Freshman forward Matt Pepdjonovic (Quincy, MA) led Suffolk with a team-high 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Rams.
The Rams held a 38-35 edge going into the break after a strong first half in which they shot 48.6% from the field. The Rams were able to hold a lead as big as nine points halfway through the opening stanza after sophomore guard Justin Barrall (East Hampton, CT) nailed a three-pointer to give the Rams a 19-10 edge.
The Falcons came out of the break strong going on a 17-6 run to open the first ten minutes of the half and then went on a 13-2 run later in the half to breakaway. Albertus had their largest margin of 15 with two minutes remaining after junior guard Walden St. Juste (Hartford, CT) hit a three-pointer that put the game out of reach. St. Juste finished the game with 16 points, with 14 points coming in the second half.
Freshman center Jefferson Lora (Bronx, NY) finished the game with 16 points and eight boards, while sophomore guard Byron Reaves (Hamden, CT) chipped in 12.
Albertus held the edge in rebounds in the game, 54-48. The Falcons took advantage of mistakes from Suffolk as they forced 27 Rams' turnover which resulted in 27 points.
The Falcons clinched sole possession of the regular season Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship ending the regular season with a 19-6, 15-3 GNAC record. #1 Albertus will host #8 Rivier College at 7:00 pm on Tuesday night.
