Howard's Two Goals Lead Falcons Over Westfield State 3-1

New Haven, CT - Jamal Howard (West Haven, CT/West Haven) scored a pair of goals including one very late in the contest to seal a 3-1 Falcons victory over visiting Westfield State University.  Albertus wasted little time as in just the 3rd minute of play freshman midfielder Gabriel Goja (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) finished a beautiful pass from sophomore forward Alphonse Buccitti (West Haven, CT/Notre Dame HS) to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.  Howard would find the back of the net for the first time in the 18th minute as he flicked the ball over the goalkeeper after receiving the pass from sophomore midfielder Steve Zapata (Hamden, CT/Hamden).

Albertus would hold onto the 2-0 lead going into halftime after five Westfield State shots on goal were turned away by freshman goalkeeper Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck).  Westfield held the edge in shots with a 5-4 edge at halftime.

The score would remain 2-0 until the 73rd minute of play when senior forward Phil Cimino (Newtown, MA) finished a ball from junior midfielder Kyle Yelin (Southwick, MA) to cut the Falcons lead in half at 2-1.

Scoring opportunities developed in the last 15 minutes of play for both teams with Westfield outshooting Albertus 7-4 in the second half.  Howard would seal the victory for Albertus when he blasted a ball off junior goalkeeper Jeff Pepoli's (Ashburnham, MA) hands into the side of the net to make the score 3-1.  It was the second time of the afternoon that Howard and Zapata combined to find the back of the net.

Piroscafo made seven saves on the afternoon for the Falcons while Pepoli made three for Westfield State.  Albertus improves to 8-2, 2-1 GNAC while Westfield State drops to 6-3, 1-1 MASCAC.  The Falcons travel to Providence, RI on Saturday at 3:00 pm to take on GNAC opponent Johnson and Wales University.
