Zapata Leads 3-1 Victory Over Suffolk University

New Haven, CT - The Albertus Magnus College Men's Soccer team won it's 10th game of the season with a 3-1 victory over Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon.  The win not only marked the 10th win of the year for the Falcons, (10-3, 4-1 GNAC) it vaulted them into a tie for second place in the GNAC.

Suffolk would find the back of the net in the 12th minute of play when freshman forward Jeff Harvey finished a rebound to put the visitors on top 1-0 in the early going.

An injury to Falcon forward Gabriel Goja (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) in the 32nd minute stunned Albertus as concern for their fallen teamate seemed to ignite their competitive spirit the rest of the game.  Senior Suffolk goalkeeper Jack DeJesus (Boston, MA) stopped a Penalty kick attempt from sophomore Steven Zapata (Hamden, CT/Hamden) in the 41st minute but he was just delaying Zapata.

Zapata would find the back of the net just one minute later when he finished a pass from sophomore forward Alphonse Buccitti (West Haven, CT/Notre Dame) to tie the game 1-1 going into halftime.

Buccitti found an opening in the 54th minute of play blasting a shot off of the far post just past the diving DeJesus.  Buccitti's luck would improve when in the 57th minute he struck the post again with the ball finding the back of the net this time to give the Falcons a 2-1 lead.

Freshman goalkeeper Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) made a key save in the 68th minute when he was able to punch an on target shot from junior midfielder Danny Lloyd (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) over the cross bar to maintain the 2-1 Falcons lead.

Zapata would add his second goal of the day in the 77th minute as he headed a ball over the keeper on a free kick off the leg of sophomore defender Chris Long (West Haven, CT/West Haven) to seal the 3-1 victory.

The Falcons improve to 10-3, 4-1 GNAC while Suffolk drops to 5-6-1, 2-2-1 GNAC.  Albertus hosts first place Emmanuel College on Monday at 3:15 pm in a battle of the top two teams in the GNAC.
