New Haven, CT - The Albertus Magnus College Men's Soccer team continued their successful season defeating visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent St. Joseph's College of Maine 1-0 on Saturday afternoon. The Falcons concluded the regular season with a program record 13 wins earning a second place finish in GNAC play.
The first half of the game featured outstanding goal keeping for both teams. Falcons freshman forward Rafael Guillen (Bakersfield, CA/Foothills) blasted a shot over junior goal keeper Nick Campasano (Goffstown, NH/Goffstown) who made a diving punch save with the shot grazing off the post in the 17th minute to preserve the 0-0 score.
St. Joseph's sophomore midfielder Gerald Cushing (Hampden, ME/Hampden Academy) shot a ball past the diving Falcons freshman goal keeper Donato Piroscafo (Naugatuck, CT/Naugatuck) and hit the post in the 20th minute of play.
The first half would end in a 0-0 tie with both teams playing very even.
The second half saw sophomore midfielder Steven Zapata (Hamden, CT/Hamden) with a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Zapata's shot sailed over the goal and the score remained tied 0-0.
Zapata had an opportunity to in the 64th minute as his well placed corner kick was finished by junior defender Tim Mikita (Ansonia, CT/Ansonia) to put the Albertus ahead 1-0. The goal was the first of Mikita's career.
Albertus would hold on to the lead as Piroscafo made another diving save in the 80th minute to preserve the shutout.
The Falcons finish the regular season in second place with a 13-4-1, 6-2-1 GNAC record while St. Joseph's College (ME) finishes the regular season 6-9-2, 3-5-1 GNAC. Albertus plays host to the first round of the GNAC playoffs on Saturday.
