Broderick's Late Goal Leads Men's Soccer Past Newbury, 2-1, in Season Opener

Somerville, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal to lead the Albertus MagnusCollege men's soccer team past Newbury, 2-1, on Tuesday night at Dilboy Stadium in non-conference action.

The Falcons won their second consecutive season opener after topping the Nighthawks, 9-2, last August at home. Albertus improves to 1-0 on the year with the one-goal victoty, while Newbury drops to 0-1 with the loss.

With the score knotted at one late in regulation, Albertus junior Alex Zapata (Hamden, Conn.) sent the ball into the box and Broderick headed past Newbury keeper Jarrod Smith for the go-ahead tally. The assist was the third of the contest for the third-year playmaker after he added a tally early in the second half.

After a scoreless first half, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 55th minute thanks to a marker from Zapata. Just over 20 minutes later, Emmett Dixon netted the equalizer for the hosts.

With a 2-1 edge late in the contest, Albertus sophomore goalkeeper Griffin Volta (Orange, Conn.) made a pair of saves to preserve the lead and help the Falcons take their first game of 2015.

Volta turned aside six shots to earn his 10th career victory for the visitors. On the opposite end, Smith stopped five shots in a losing effort for Newbury.

The Nighthawks held a slight, 13-11, advantage in shots and the Falcons took six corners to Newbury's four. Both teams were whistled for 12 fouls, including four yellow cards in the hard-fought tilt.

Junior forward Alexis Garcia-Romero (West Haven, Conn.) and Plona tied for a team-high two shots on goal for the Falcons. Zapata's goal was the 14th of his career and his helper was also his 14th in collegiate action.

Albertus returns to action this Saturday, September 5 with its home opener at 1:00 p.m. versus Regis.
