Northfield, Vt. – The Albertus Magnus men's soccer team fell to Norwich University, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon, on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. With the loss, the Falcons move to 8-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play, while the Cadets improved to 10-4-1 on the year and 6-1-0 in conference tilts.
Christian Albrecht headed home a corner kick service from freshman Ethan Melia in the 26th minute to provide the game's only offense. Norwich Freshman goalkeeper Stefan Skoff made the goal stand up, making seven saves to earn his fifth shutout of the season.
With the victory, continued to keep pace with Johnson & Wales at the top of the league standings with both teams sporting a 6-1 GNAC record. The win also marked the 10th straight season that Norwich has won at least 10 games under head coach Kyle Dezotell.
The Cadets also have clinched at least a top-four seed for the GNAC playoffs, guaranteeing them at least a home quarterfinal matchup. Norwich travels to face third place Mount Ida on Wednesday in a crucial showdown. The Mustangs have a 5-1-1 record and are just two points back of NU.
Norwich outshot Albertus Magnus 21-9. Skoff made two key saves early in the second half to keep the Falcons off the board. He stopped senior midfielder Jesse Plona (Trumbull, Conn.) and junior midfielder Ben Colter (Guilford, Conn.) just minutes apart in the first six minutes of the half to keep Norwich out front 1-0.
In net, Albertus Magnus freshman goalkeeper Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) made four saves in a losing effort.
The Falcons return to action on Wednesday, October 21, with a home conference clash against Suffolk at 5:30 pm at Celentano Field.
