Men's Soccer Weekly Preview: Regis & Brooklyn College

This Week: The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team is set to begin the 2016 campaign with a pair of non-conference games this week. The Falcons open the fall at Regis on Thursday afternoon before hosting Brooklyn College on Saturday.

Key Returners: Offensively, Albertus Magnus returns its top five scorers from last fall led by senior Alex Zapata. Zapata received All-GNAC distinction for the second straight year in 2015, after leading led the team in goals (10), points (24), shots on goal (36) and game-winning goals (4), while tying for the team-lead with four assists. Alexis Garcia-Romero, Justyn Broderick and Matt Mueller are all back as well up front for the Falcons. The trio combined for 13 goals and eight assists. In net, a pair of sophomores in Joe Russo and Nick Cappiello will lead the AMC back-end this autumn.

Preseason Poll: The Falcons were picked to finish fifth in the 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Preseason Poll. The poll, which was released last week, was voted on by the league's 10 head coaches. Albertus Magnus earned 66 points to finish seven points back of Norwich for fourth-place.

Last Year: The men's soccer team is coming off another successful season, finishing with an 11-9 overall and qualifying for the GNAC Tournament as the No. 6 seed. In their 20th appearance in the conference tournament, the team upset third-seeded Saint Joseph's (Maine) and No. 2 seed Mount Ida en route to their second GNAC title appearance in the last four seasons. Albertus Magnus fell in the conference title game.

NOTES:
- Albertus Magnus returns three All-GNAC players from last year's team. Zapata, Garcia-Romero and Mueller. Mueller had his strongest campaign as a member of the Falcons this fall and as a result earned league-wide recognition for the first time. In 2015, he scored five goals and added an assist for 11 points. Arguably his strongest games of the season came in a 2-0 win at home versus Rivier, as he netted both of the team's tallies.
- Head Coach Jim Bernardo enters the season with a 116-86-17 record, including a 56-37-7 mark in conference play. He is the second coach in program history to record 100 career victories. He has the most conference wins in school history.
- In total, the Falcons have made 20 appearances in the GNAC Tournament having gone 14-16-4 with a pair of conference titles to their name. AMC took home the league crown in 1996 and most recently in 2012. The team has qualified for the GNAC Tournament every year under Bernardo and qualified 17 years in a row.
- AMC is in search of its third straight season-opening win. The Falcons have topped Newbury each of the last two years to start the campaign.
