Men's Soccer Wins Overtime Thriller Versus Western Connecticut

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team blanked visiting Western Connecticut State, 2-1, in overtime on Tuesday evening in non-conference action at Celentano Field. 

The Falcons (6-2-1) run their unbeaten streak to five games with their fifth one-goal win of the fall, while the Colonials (2-6) dropped their third straight road contest.

With the score knotted at one and just 13 second remaining in the second overtime period, junior forward Justyn Broderick (Orange, Conn.) netted the game-winning goal. Off a foul by Western Connecticut, AMC junior midfielder Ritchy Jean Pierre (Fairfield, Conn.) played the a through ball to Broderick who beat fired a shot past Colonial netminder Luca DiCarlo. Dicarlo came off his line and Broderick made him pay with his fourth marker of the fall. 

Albertus Magnus opened the scoring in the 29th minute courtesy of a strike from Jean Pierre. Jean Pierre collected a loose ball in the box and buried his third tally of the year. 

Late in regulation, the guests would tie the score at one off a scramle in the box. Darion Richeme' scored his team-leading fourth goal of the fall to level the score in the 84th minute. 

In net, Albertus Magnus sophomore Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) turned aside two shots to earn his sixth victory of the year. On the opposite end, Dicarlo made four saves in a losing effort for the Colonials. 

Eight of the nine Albertus Magnus games this season, including each of the last seven, have been decided by one goal of fewer. 

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Saturday, October 1, with a home Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown against Emmanuel that is slated to begin a 3:15 pm at Celentano Field.
