New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team was defeated by Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe St. Joseph's College (Maine), 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at Celentano Field.
The Falcons dropped to 7-4-1, (2-2-1 GNAC) with the setback, while the visiting Monks improved to 10-1-3, (5-0 GNAC) remaining undefeated in GNAC play.
St. Joe's opened the scoring in the 13th minute off the head of sophomore forward Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) from a a well placed cross off the leg of sophomore defensivemen Mitchell Cyr (Rochester, N.H.). The score would remain 1-0 at the end of the first half with the visitors holding a 8-3 shots advantage while Albertus held the edge in corner kicks 3-1.
In the 58th minute, Mattos would find the back of the net again off his head but this time on a cross from senior defensemen Nicholas Borowski (Webster, Mass.) to give the Monks the 2-0 lead eventually holding on to earn the 2-0 victory.
In net, AMC sophomore Joe Russo (North Haven, Conn.) turned aside seven shots in a losing effort for the Falcons. On the opposite end, St. Joe's sophomore Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) picked up the win for the Monks turning away five shots.
The visitors held a 12-5 advantage in shots and took three corners compared to four for the hosts.
Albertus Magnus returns to action on Monday, October 10, with a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) showdown in Nashua, N.H. against Rivier University that is slated to begin at 4:00 pm.
