The Albertus Magnus men's volleyball team fell to Newbury College 3-0 on Monday night to fall to 1-5 on the year. The Falcons fell in the opening set 25-20 and then fell in the second set 25-21. In the final set, Newbury controlled the match-up, winning 25-12.
Newbury setter Michael Holihan paced the offensive attack for the Nighthawks as he dished out 25 assists in the contest to go along with five kills and three blocks as Newbury won their sixth match of the season.
Albertus was led by five kills from both Justina Tharau (Burlington, Conn.) and Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.). Eric Woodcox (Burlington, Conn.) handed out 16 assists on the night to go along with five block assists for the Falcons.
Albertus set the tone in the first set, registering 10 total blocks. Sophomore Joshua Turner (Trumbull, Conn.) led Albertus with four block assists in the set. The Albertus defensive pressure was not enough though as Newbury's Nile Fox and Wade Robidoux combined for six kills on nine tries en route to a 25-20 Nighthawk victory.
Albertus jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second set as the Falcons continued to play big at the net, registering five total blocks early on. The Falcons led for a majority of the set but midway through, a Newbury run gave the host team an 18-16 advantage. Back and forth play came out with Newbury on top, winning the set 25-21.
In the third set, the Falcons took an early 4-1 lead but Newbury battled back to take control of the set by hitting an impressive .400. Five Albertus errors late in the final set secured the 25-12 victory for the Nighthawks.
As a team, Albertus finished the night with 22 blocks, 20 of which were assisted. Turner finished the contest with eight blocks, including one solo block.
Albertus will return to action on Wednesday when the Falcons host Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe Emmanuel College in a 7:00 p.m. contest in New Haven.
