2011-12 Championships and Major Accolades
The Albertus Magnus Department of Athletics had a very successful 2011-12 year, producing two GNAC Regular-Season Championship teams, one GNAC Tournament Championship team, two All-Americans and 33 All-Conference Team selections.

Thuerling’s No-Hitter Lifts Falcons over New Rochelle 17-0
A nine-run first inning paved the way for the Albertus Magnus softball team as the Falcons went on to defeat New Rochelle 17-0 in the semifinals of the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Danielle Thuerling (Wallingford, Conn.) struck out 10 as she threw her first collegiate no-hitter. Thuerling went five innings and was one walk away from a perfect game.

The Albertus Magnus softball team fell to St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn) 8-0 in six innings in the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference Invitational Championship game on Saturday.

Maio Named to GNAC All-Conference Third Team
Freshman Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus softball team has been named to the GNAC All-Conference Third Team as announced by the league on Sunday night. Maio led the Falcons with a .348 batting average during the regular season in 38 games played.

Falcons Edged by Mount Ida 5-4 in Game 1
Mount Ida edged the Albertus Magnus softball team 5-4 in game one of the Saturday afternoon double-header in Newton, Mass. Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.) threw six innings, while allowing 14 hits and five runs. She also recorded a hit and an RBI for the Falcons in the loss.

Mount Ida’s Tiffany Hamann recorded a walk-off RBI single as the Mustangs came-from-behind to defeat the Albertus Magnus softball team 6-5 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

Emerson’s Kelsey Tuthill threw a one-hitter as the Lions defeated the Albertus Magnus softball team 9-0 in six innings on Friday afternoon. Albertus’ Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) tallied the Falcons’ lone hit in the shutout loss.

The Albertus Magnus softball team scored six runs on five hits in the opening inning en route to an 8-0 shutout victory (five innings) over Emmanuel (Mass.) in GNAC action on Friday evening. The Falcons’ Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) finished the contest with one hit, two runs scored and two RBI to lead her team to victory.

A three-run third inning lifted the Albertus Magnus softball team to a 5-1 final over Brooklyn College in game two of its Wednesday night double header. Albertus registered just two hits, while Brooklyn committed four errors, as the Falcons improved to 12-16 on the year.

The Albertus Magnus softball team dropped an 8-3 decision to Brooklyn College on Wednesday night in the first game of a non-conference double header. Maria Mantagas led the Bulldogs with three hits, including a two-run home run and two doubles.

Lasell scored three-runs in the top of the ninth inning en route to an 8-6 GNAC win over the Albertus Magnus softball team on Sunday. Three hits and an Albertus error put the Lasers ahead 8-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth before they earned their fourth victory of the season.

Celebrate Frankie’s Birthday/Student-Athlete Appreciation Day
Albertus Magnus College will celebrate the birthday of its mascot, Frankie the Falcon, in honor of Student-Athlete Appreciation Day on April 4. Student-Athlete Appreciation Day is honored annually on April 6 but with the day falling on Good Friday, Frankie’s birthday will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 4 at noon in the DeDominicis Dining Hall.

Led by a 3-for-3 performance from sophomore Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus softball team defeated Johnson & Wales (R.I.) 4-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Falcons hand JWU its first conference loss of the season.

Johnson & Wales (R.I.) improved to 5-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Sunday with an 11-0 win over the Albertus Magnus softball team in West Haven. Taylor Cwalinski threw a no-hitter and walked one batter to lead the Wildcats to their eighth win of the season. The Wildcats’ only loss in conference play was to the Falcons in the first game of the Sunday double header.

Despite an RBI double from Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus softball team fell to Simmons College 10-1 in five innings in the Falcons’ home opener on Friday night. The Sharks took the first game of the double header by the eight-run rule to improve to 1-0 in GNAC play.

A four-run sixth inning lifted the Albertus Magnus softball team to a 4-1 win over Simmons College in the second game of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference double-header on Friday night. The GNAC win marks the first for the program since defeating Emmanuel 5-2 at home on April 21, 2008.

Alumni Spotlight: Diana Burroughs '98, Basketball & Softball
Diana Burroughs '98 is the only student-athlete in the history of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference to be named Player of the Year in two different sports. Not only did she earn that top recoginition in two different sports while at Albertus, but she did so in the same academic year.
