Elaina Maio (West Haven, Conn.) went 4-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Albertus Magnus softball team to a 9-1 victory in six innings at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
The win gives the Falcons their 10th victory of the season as they improve to 10-12 on the year and 6-8 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
After two scoreless innings, the Falcons took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third led by a three-run home run from Melissa Manning (Milford, Conn.), her second four-bagger of the season. After Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, Conn.) scored on a Pine Manor error to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead, Manning cleared the bases with her home run over the centerfield wall to give Albertus a 4-0 advantage.
Pine Manor posted its only run of the game in the bottom of the frame to cut the Falcons' lead to 4-1 before a three-run fourth inning by Albertus put the game out of reach for the Gators. In the frame, Maio registered a two RBI single to center before Mirto recorded an RBI ground out to give Albertus a 7-1 lead.
The Falcons secured the victory with two runs in the top of the sixth as Maio doubled to left to plate the Falcons' final run of the contest.
Danielle Thuerling (Wallingford, Conn.) allowed six hits and gave up just one run in her seventh win of the season. The freshman also struck out six. Tia Nelson fell to 1-6 from the hill for the Gators as she went 3.1 innings and allowed seven runs and seven hits.
Manning finished the contest with one hit and three RBI, while Figueroa scored three times for the Falcons in the win.
Albertus will head to Norwich on Saturday to take on the Cadets in GNAC action beginning at 1:00 p.m.
