In game two of the Saturday afternoon doubleheader, the Albertus Magnus softball team fell to Simmons College 8-1.
With the loss, the Falcons move to 7-11 on the year, while Simmons improved to 10-4 overall.
Simmons took an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first on an Alaina DeNoncour RBI single to centerfield. Albertus had a chance to tie in the top of the second as Aimee Mirto (Hamden, Conn.) singled to center to reach base. A line drive by Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) was caught by the diving Simmons' shortstop to deny Puccilli of a hit.
Simmons added four runs in the bottom of the second inning before scoring two runs in the third and one in the fifth.
Albertus broke the scoreless streak with a run in the top of the third inning. Jamie Vesciglio (Stratford, Conn.) led off the inning with a single before moving into scoring position on an infield error. After Veronica Hribko (East Haven, Conn.) walked to put two runners on, Isabel Lopez (West Haven, Conn.) singled to right to score Vesciglio from third.
Amanda Cordeiro picked up the victory for Simmons as she earned her fourth win of the season. She struck out six on the afternoon as well. Albertus' Jackie Medina (Bridgeport, Conn.) took the loss as she gave up 13 hits and eight runs, while walking six batters.
Albertus returns to action on Tuesday, April 2 with a non-conference doubleheader at the College of New Rochelle. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
