Softball Splits Twinbill, Downs Bay Path for Second Win of Season

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team split a doubleheader against Bay Path and Gettysburg on Thursday at the NMB Park and Sports Complex. The Falcons edged past the the Wildcats, 8-3, in seven innings before falling to the Bullets, 4-1,  in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED

(T) 2nd Inning - Albertus Magnus took the early 2-0 lead over the Wildcats after Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) drove in two when she doubled to left field in the second inning.

(T) 3rd Inning - With two outs and runners on first and second, Marissa Gugliemi (Branford, Conn.) singled on a hard ground ball to left to allow Laura Anderson to score to give the Falcons the 3-0 advantage.

(B) 4th Inning - Bay Path cut the Falcons' lead to within two, 3-1, after the Wildcats tallied their first run in the bottom of the fourth.

(T) 5th Inning - Albertus Magnus recorded a big inning in the top of the fifth as the team scored four runs to extend its lead to six, 7-1. The Falcons' big inning was driven by a stolen base and a RBI single by Gugliemi and two-run triple by Cataudella.

(B) 5th/6th Inning - Over the next two innings, Bay Path went on to score four runs to bring the Wildcats to within two, 7-5. All four runs were scored when Bay Path had two outs and runners in scoring position.

(T) 7th Inning - Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) added the extra tally in the top of seventh as she allowed Maselli to score off a hard ground ball to short.

GAME 2 SCORE: Gettysburg 4| Albertus Magnus 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

(B) 2nd Inning - Gettysburg took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. With one out, Mykaela Twitchell drove in two runs when she singled to right field before Taylor Doi drove in the third run of inning off a single to left field.

(B) 5th Inning - The Bullets tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fith as Jamie Abell laid down the sacrifice bunt to allow Doi to cross home.

(T) 6th Inning - Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) scored the Falcons' only run of the game in the top of the sixth after she allowed Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) to come home off a RBI single to right field.

A LOOK INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

  • Kristen Cunning picked up the loss for the Falcons after she allowed four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings of play.
  • Morgan Clauser earned the win for the Bullets. Over seven innings, she tallied six strikeouts, three hits, one run and a walk.
