Softball Sweeps Sarah Lawrence in Non-Conference Doubleheader on Friday

New Haven, Conn. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team swept new rival Sarah Lawrence in a non-conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Celentano Field. The Falcons took game one, 6-5, after scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth, and wrapped up the afternoon with a 10-2 win in the night cap.

(B) 1st Inning  – With two outs and a runner on third, Marissa Guglielmi (Branford, Conn.) singled to left field to allow Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) to score, after she led off the inning with a hit by pitch. Following Guglielmi's single, Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) ended the inning with a fly out to the pitcher and the Falcons would lead 1-0 heading into the second. 

(B) 3rd Inning – Guglielmi struck again for the Falcons in the third as she collected her second RBI of the game after she singled to left field, advancing Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) home, extending the hosts' lead to 2-0. 

(T) 4th Inning – Sarah Lawrence rallied in the fourth as the Gryphons scored four runs on four hits to take their first lead of the game, 4-2.

(T) 5th Inning – An inning later, Sarah Lawrence pushed its lead to three, 5-2, after tacking on a single run in the top off the fifth.

(B) 6th Inning – However, bats came alive in the bottom of the sixth as the Falcons scored four runs on three hits to secure the 6-5 win. With two outs, Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) comes in to pinch hit for Maxine Sanchez (Corona, N.Y.) and sends the ball over the fence to record her first home run of the season as well as scored two runs.  Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) allowed Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) to cross home, tying the game at 5-5, before Brianna Whitfield (West Islip, N.Y.) doubled to send the winning runner home.


  • Whitfield and Guglielmi led the Falcons with two hits each while Guglielmi recorded a team-high two RBI along with Wehder.
  • As a team, Albertus Magnus went 8-for-26 at the plate as well as recorded five RBI.
  • Sarah Lawrence also recorded eight hits on the afternoon as well as five RBI.
  • Three different players from Sarah Lawrence registered two hits.

(B) 1st Inning – With two outs and runners on second and first, Melissa Castillo recorded a RBI double to allow Wehder and Whitfield to score to put the Falcons up 2-0.

(T) 2nd Inning – Sarah Lawrence answered back cutting the Falcons' lead in half, 2-1, after scoring a run on three hits.

(B)2nd Inning  However, Albertus Magnus responded back scoring a run in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run RBI double from Fortier.

(B) 3rd / 4th Inning - Over the next two innings, Albertus Mangus extended its lead to eight, 9-1, after scoring a run in the third and four runs in the fourth.
(T) 5th Inning – Sarah Lawrence final threat of the game came in the top of the fifth as the runner scored with one out and runners on first and third. 
(B) 5th Inning – Albertus added an extra tally in the bottom of the fifth to secure the home opener.


  • Fortier led the offensive attack with three hits while Anderson and Wedher collected two apiece.
  • Albertus Magnus finished the game 10-of-22 at the plate while the Gryphons went 8-of-22.
  • Wehder led the team with four RBI and two runs scored.
  • Taryn Penna led the visitors' offense with two hits.

The Falcons return to action on March 28th at Purchase State.
