With a 90-33 victory over Wheelock College, the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team moved to 4-0 to begin the 2012-13 season as the Falcons tie their best start in program history, a record they earned just a year ago. Junior Lindsay Karle (Wallingford, Conn.) led the way for the Falcons in the dominating victory as she scored a game-high 17 points on a 7-of-15 showing from the floor.
The Falcons led Wheelock (0-3) 36-16 at the half as freshman Kelsey Pendagast (Shelton, Conn.) registered three points and eight rebounds in 11 minutes off the bench. Pendagast, who was named this week's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Rookie of the Week, finished the night with 10 rebounds, seven points and three blocked shots as she recorded her third game with double-digit boards.
The Falcons struggled from the field in the first half, hitting just 13 of their 40 attempts, but defensively were able to hold Wheelock in check, giving up just six field goals. The Falcons opened the contest with a 7-2 run before Wheelock battled back to take an 11-9 lead. A 13-0 Albertus run midway through the half gave the Falcons a 22-11 lead capped by a lay-up by Karle at the 8:07 mark in the frame. The Falcons went on a 10-0 run to end the half as Karle and Pendagast each scored four points to lead the way.
Albertus came out of the break and shot 66.7-percent from the floor in the second half of play, a team-high for the Falcons this season. The Falcons hit 22 of their 33 attempts from the field to extend their lead in the frame.
Lianna Carrero (Hamden, Conn.) finished the game with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Sophomore Taylor Jagoe (Milford, Conn.) recorded a career-high 10 points in 20 minutes of work, while Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn.) added eight points, five assists and two steals.
Albertus returns to action on Tuesday, November 27 when the Falcons travel to Becker College for a 6:00 p.m. non-conference match-up.
