The Albertus Magnus women's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 match to CCNY on Saturday afternoon to open the 2013 season. The non-conference match lasted almost four hours and was played down to the wire as the entire match was decided by the final match.
After an 8-6 win in No. 3 doubles by Albertus' Theresa Piniero (New Haven, Conn.) and Sogona Sacko (New York, N.Y.), the Falcons won three singles matches to tie the score at 4-4.
In the final match of the day, No. 5 singles, CCNY's Maigon Nobbs edged Piniero 6-4, 6-3 to secure the match victory for her team.
Despite the team loss, three newcomers contributed with wins as Piniero was a part of the No. 3 doubles' victory, while Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) downed Andriana Aivazian with a pair of 6-2 sets in No. 1 singles' action.
Freshman Stephanie Thy (New Haven, Conn.) also earned a victory in her collegiate singles' debut as she defeated Tobi Oojo 7-5, 6-1 in No. 4 singles.
Albertus returns to action on Friday, Sept. 13 at Mitchell College. That non-conference match is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
