The Albertus Magnus women's tennis team battled to a 6-3 victory over Mitchell College on Friday afternoon to record the Falcons' first win of the 2013 season. With the victory, Albertus is 1-1 on the year.
The Falcons got off to a good start, taking two of the three doubles' matches led by the due of freshman Zaida Velazco (Dominican Republic) and senior Sandybell Anorga (Stamford, Conn.) who won No. 1 doubles 8-6 over Carly Paterson and Samantha Ryan.
Mitchell's Chelsea Arpin and Ariel Hallisey won No. 3 doubles with an 8-3 victory, while the two also won No. 5 and 6 singles over the Falcons' Sogona Sacko (New York, N.Y.) and Sharinna Luna (Bronx, N.Y.).
The Falcons clinched the match victory by winning at the top four singles' sports. Velazco topped Paterson by scores of 6-2, 6-1 in No. 1 singles, while Ty downed Alexa Litwak 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2. Grant was also victorious as she won in straight sets at No. 3 singles, while Anorga picked up her first win of the season with a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory after falling in the opening set to Anysia Lombardo 7-5.
The Falcons return to action on Sunday when they host Bay Path in non-conference action at 1:00 p.m.
