Women's Volleyball Wins Five-Set Thriller at York in Season Opener

Jamaica, N.Y. – The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team opened the 2015 season with a 3-2 road win versus York College on Wednesday night inside the York College Gym in non-conference action. With the score knotted at two games apiece, the visitors took the final game to score a 25-11, 20-25, 25-20, 11-25, 15-11 triumph. The Falcons improve to 1-0 with the win, while the Cardinals dropped to 0-1 with the setback.

In the fifth and deciding game, Albertus erased an early 6-2 deficit behind three kills and an ace to tie it at six. With the score later tied at eight, the Falcons scored seven of the final 10 points to earn the win.

The visitors took command early with a resounding 25-11 win in the first game. After dropping the second game, Albertus bounced back with a 25-20 win to take a 2-1 edge. York once again answered in the fourth game to force a fifth game.

Offensively, freshman middle hitter Megan Gritz (Milford, Conn.) led the charge for the Falcons with 11 kills and four aces. Sophomore defensive specialist Marielis Muriel (New Haven, Conn.) did a good job distributing the ball, dishing out 24 assists. Muriel also was a force on the defensive end, recording 10 digs to register a double-double. Sophomore middle hitter Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.) added four kills, five aces and a team-high 12 digs. Senior right side Amber Cohens (West Haven, Conn.) contributed eight kills and classmate Ramona Onofrio (East Haven, Conn.) had a strong game for Albertus Magnus from the service line with a team-best six aces.

As a team, Albertus had 30 kills, 26 assists, 20 service aces and 46 digs.  

The win marked the first career coaching victory for Albertus Head Coach Vanessa Rosario in her debut. The season-opening triumph was the first for Albertus since taking a five-set thriller versus Elms in 2012.

The Falcons returns to action on Saturday, September 5 with a road tilt against in-state foe Mitchell at 12:00 p.m.
